2016 Ag Adventure Tour:
Economic Development in Rural Communities
July 27-28, 2016

From Nebraska’s Biggest Rodeo, to all things “bees”, popcorn production, renovated theaters, community school projects and local business development, rural areas are thriving!

Wednesday, July 27

7:30 am – leave FCSA parking lot 855 Fallbrook Blvd., Lincoln, NE 68524

9:15 am – Arrive at Career Pathways Institute in Grand Island – Meet with Dan Phillips CPI coordinator to learn about how they work with at-risk students to teach them employable skills while keeping them in the school system. Also learn about the partnership between education, economic development and agri-business that made CPI a reality.

10:00 am – leave Grand Island to travel to Scotia

11:00 – Arrive Happy Jack’s Chalk Mine – Tour the area, learn about the history of one of only two underground diatomic mines known to have existed in the United States, and the only one that is open to the public.

12 – Noon – Leave Scotia to travel to Ord

12:30 pm – Arrive at Golden Husk- refurbished theatre in Ord – for dinner and discussion with local Economic Development director, Trevor Lee, Golden Husk manager and Valley County Foundation. Director, Dahn Hagge and Shelby Kittle, a youth business owner from Ord who just started a new business called Shel-Bees (bee production and honey sales).

1:30 pm – Leave Golden Husk – walk to Scratchtown Brewery and talk about the development of this business with Caleb Pollard the owner who was the previous Economic Development Director for Valley County – sample some of his brews while we are there J

2:15 pm – Leave Scratchtown and travel to Zangger Popcorn Hybrids

2:30 pm – Arrive Zangger Popcorn – Tour and talk with Josh Zangger, Manager. Zangger is a family owned corporation which actually started in 1954 with Polled Hereford breeding stock and selling commercial popcorn. We will learn how the corporation has grown and developed over the years into this premier popcorn industry.

3:15 pm – Leave Zangger Popcorn

3:25 – 4:10 pm Travel to Airport Inn in Ord, get our keys for our rooms and then travel on to Burwell

4:10 pm – Travel to Burwell – Reid Hagstrom will give an overview of the Ord Distillers Plant while we travel

4:35 pm – Arrive in Burwell – Meet with representatives from economic development, Nebraska’s Big Rodeo and the Calamus Outfitters – Our presenters will talk on the bus about local economy, activities sponsored by the Outfitters and business development in Burwell while we tour the Burwell area.

5:45 pm – Drop passengers off at Fairgrounds to give them the opportunity to look at fair exhibits, eat from one of the various vendors and make their way to the rodeo

7:30 pm – Burwell rodeo (ticket will be provided. We will have reserved seating)

10:00 – have bus stationed someplace for pick up – rodeo concludes around 10:30 pm, we’ll have the bus stationed just in case some leave early.

10:30- pm – Or when we have everyone, we will drive back to Ord!

11:00 pm – Arrive at motel – Hopefully everyone’s luggage is already in their room and all they have to do is get there

 

Thursday, July 28

7:30 – 7:45 am – Will arrange bus to pick up for both locations: 7:30 at Airport Inn annex, 7:45 at main hotel. Breakfast will be provided by Reid and Kristi Hagstrom at their home.

8:00 am – Breakfast at Reid Hagstrom dwelling

9:00 am – leave to drive to Loup City

9:30 am – Arrive Loup City – Cook and Beals Inc., a Honey processing and retrieval equipment business which has been in existence since 1959. They are a worldwide contact for all things “bees” with honey processing equipment and retrieval needs.

10:30 am – Leave Cook and Beals – travel to BL Shoppe, Loup City

10:30 – 11:15 am – BL Shoppe – Meet with owner and local mayor, Alec Baillie. Mayor Baillie will give us a tour and overview of BL Shoppe which specializes in antiques and gifts for all occasions. They also sell barn quilts and have a local greenhouse on site.

 

11:15 am – Leave Loup City – As we travel Bob Krier, Marketing Director of Nebraska Central Telephone Company will talk about their support for local community efforts and engagement.

12:00 pm – Arrive at Danish Bakery in Dannebrog for an hour with the Pizza Man and lunch.

1:00 pm – Leave Dannebrog – travel to Central City

1:40 pm – Arrive Central City – Meet with local economic development, Community Foundation and Chamber officials, –tour Nebraska’s First Showcase Community

2:45 pm – Leave Central City

4:45 – 5 pm – Arrive back in Lincoln
