Bryan High School FFA needs your help

Calling all members

At the June 7, 2016 LEAD Alumni Board Meeting, the opportunity to work with Bryan High School in Omaha was discussed. Bryan has an Ag Academy which this year has about 50 students enrolled. Bryan’s Ag Academy administration and instructors have asked the alumni to assist them with this effort.
To give you a little background, Bryan is currently the only Omaha Public School to have an agricultural program and has now become the largest FFA chapter in the State of Nebraska. In this academy, students utilize knowledge of both urban and traditional agriculture to be innovators in their field and positive members in the community. Agricultural themes are incorporated into their core coursework such as plant and animal science and food production.

Bryan is asking for some assistance in the 2016/2017 school year with the following:
1. Specific Tours:
a. Field trips –short jaunts – ideally within 90 miles of the school to get a first-hand view of your farm/business/organization. These should be “focused” tours i.e. Corn production, irrigation/water, ethanol industry, cattle etc. In other words, the time spent learning about similar subject matter so in-depth perspective can be gained by the students.
b. The objective would be to give urban youth a deeper understanding of agriculture by viewing real life operations.

2. In-Class Presentations:
a. Various Alumni volunteers come to the classroom one per month to present during the 45 minute class period. This is our opportunity to showcase our Ag business. These presentations can be based on what the alumni “produces”, the agri-business they are involved with, research they are involved with etc. Basically anything agriculture. The instructors want to give these youth more than what they can learn out of a book or by visiting Omaha Agri-businesses. Discussing this with them, it seems like this might look more like a brief intro to the subject matter, slides or power point with pictures if the alum wants to use that medium, and mostly one on one Q & A. Also any hands on activity would be an added bonus.
b. The objective would be to have interaction and exposure to the Ag industry and corresponding career opportunities.

a. Specific classes and/or FFA activities require judging for presentations, conducting mock interviews etc. Bryan would like to have alumni involved in judging these events.
b. The objective would be to provide outside ag industry perspectives and an opportunity to mentor a young Ag Academy student
4. Assist with “Rural Ag Immersion Tour”:
a. Provide tour stops for this tour. They typically do this in the fall and do not go farther than 90 miles of Bryan. This one day tour is a day of viewing differing ag industries
b. Objective of this tour is to give the students a variety of rural Ag and Agri-business. Many times this is the first time these youth have been on an actual farm. It gives them a chance to see/touch/feel agriculture first hand.
